All in all it was quite disappointing.

We toured this place when we were searching for options, or at least we tried to. Even though we had scheduled the tour ahead of time, they didn't know we were coming and were unprepared. It was also further than we wanted to be. All in all it was quite disappointing.

The atmosphere and environment of this facility is very good. The facility looks neat, orderly, somewhat cheerful, and smells fine. This is not a locked facility and that concerns me a little. I was told that the entrances are monitored and any time the doors are opened, a staff would receive a pager vibration that would alert them to it. When we first walked in, I didn't see anyone come to the front door to investigate. I wonder if Mom needs a more secure facility than this one.

Friendly staff, but challenges due to short staffing.

It's fairly clean. But cleaning the apartment used to be part of the deal. Now they're saying the apartment isn't going to be cleaned once a week like it was before, because they're short of staff. And we've noticed our loved one's apartment smells now. We would expect them to reduce the rate or up their standards since we're paying for this service. The staff are very friendly though. Bobby in the dining room is a really top-notch guy and is really good with the residents. They have good activities, and our loved one is excited about the church services. They held a nice Mother's Day event in May. [name removed], the activities director, is awesome. However, the care could be improved, specifically regarding response times to call buttons. They're not answering the call buttons within 15 minutes like they say they do. I know nationwide there is a shortage of workers, including here at Emerald Bay. And it make me upset that there is no reduction in cost when we're receiving reduced quality of service.

Minor upkeep details are neglected

The only thing I really liked about the facility was the Marketing director and activities director. With everything else, I was not impressed at all. The rooms did not have central air. If you wanted to have air conditioning you would have to ask maintenance to put in a window AC. There was water damage on the roof and it was not in the greatest shape. It seemed like all of the minor details of upkeep were [Removed]. Also, in your room you only have a half bath. For the showers, you would have to go to the community showers which were not the cleanest. If you want your own bathroom, I would not recommend this facility.

Experience at Emerald Bay

My loved one's moved out of Emerald Bay Retirement Community 6 weeks after moving in. There was no communication with the family except for letting us know that they gave their 30 day notice. The staff did not help them adjust and didn't let us know how unhappy they were in the weeks leading up to the notice. At that time, they told me that my loved one was mean to the employees but yet they hadn't documented anything. On that same phone call they told me my loved one showed signs of early stages of dementia. The food was mainly canned and processed food. They had the same 7 menu items every week. They did hire a new cook and the food had improved significantly right before they moved out. The activities were just okay. My loved one wanted new and additional activities, but apparently she was supposed to coordinate them. The activities that they did have were more geared towards residents with more severe limitations. There were not a lot of fun events for those that were more independent.

Best for Independent Care, Somethings Good, Somethings Average

My loved one hated it here. The first time I had a meeting with management they told me we had to move out within 30 days. You really have to be an independent person. Not a hoyer lift situation. Overall, you don't get as much care as you think. They are short staffed. I have had to help with the care of my loved one a few times here. During meal times, all the staff seem to disappear.

Good Community, But Now Needs Improvement and Cleaning Crew

The community recently lost their activities director and they don't have a lot of activities going on for the residents. They have lost the head nurse, and director at the same time as they lost the activities director. The community has smell in the memory care area. Due to these inconsistences I wouldn't recommend you place your loved one in the community.

Located in older business district which made the setting undesirable. The building was older and not well cared for. The marketing person was friendly and gave us some good advice, which was the best part of our tour.

Mom did not have a good experience.....

I am sorry to say that my Mom did not have a good experience at Marla Vista. Just a few issues we had included: My Mom, like many elderly, had very fragile skin. It was in her chart that she should not have band aids applied. Someone in the facility put a band aid on, which was concerning, but what was really unforgivable, is that another personal care worker RIPPED IT OFF, TAKING MY Moms skin with it. My Mom called me crying from the pain this lady caused her. That band aid could have been left on to fall off in a few days, but instead, it left open, painful wounds that needed weeks to heal. This was done by someone who had a lot of experience working with the elderly, which makes one question the poor decision she made to remove it. My Mom also had breathing problems. It took me 3 different times to get the staff to leave her rescue inhaler next to her bed so that if she needed it in an emergency, it was available. The staff just kept saying that she couldn't' have it in her room with her. We needed a doctors order to do so, but they never told us that until we fought for it. The communication about important things like that were lacking. I had made many phone calls to the administrator, and she did not return my calls. I mistakenly thought that the staff member who came out to "assess" my Mom was a nurse. She was dressed in scrubs when she came to assess her to take her medical history. It wasn't until my Mom moved there and started having health issues, that I realized that this staff member had no medical training. It caused a lot of undue stress on my Mom and our family. We were paying Marla Vista at a rate that included 1 assist for all transfers. My Mom was found walking around the facility by herself on a number of occasions by family members who went to visit her. They also kept increasing her rate claiming she needed more care than initially thought, which simply was not accurate. We had to continually fight for her to get the care they promised they could give. The place looks lovely, which is part of what drew us to it. If you have a loved one who doesn't need much care, this may be a good fit for you. But if you have someone who does need quite a bit of care, I would suggest you fully check out any place you go, make sure there are medically trained personnel who are familiar with what your loved one needs, and try to make an informed decision. If you do have problems in a facility, I found out after we removed my Mom, that you can contact an Ombudsman to help with situations in facilities that aren't caring for your loved one in a satisfactory manner. Thank you for this opportunity to review Marla Vista.

Bad choice

Marla vista assisted living on military is not the place to work nor should u send your love ones to live there. Staff suck and they lazy and don’t care about the residents. They never have enough staff to help the residents. The ones who can’t do much for themselves get treated the worst. Management is awful and very disrespectful and never handles business. Marketing puts on a front while doing tours of the buildings. The facility is dirty especially memory care. If you ask me the place needs to be shut down. The food is trash and keeps the residents and staff sick and [removed]. Be aware of this place they definitely put on a good show. 0/10 rating

Not good

While my mom was in Emerald Bay memory care, she was evicted and forced to move during a snow storm. She was 91, had dementia and was on hospice. EB cancelled their contract with Medicaid. My mom died 3 weeks after moving out of EB. Her heart was broken. Transfer trauma is real. I would never recommend Emerald Bay to anyone.

Terrible

Employees always on cell phones, the activities director was nice. They have a button on the door to let you in and out, which is fine if your not waiting for a long time to get out when a employees clearly see you and wont bother to let you out. Plus then it broke with what they charge they could fix it. The room had the same dust bunny’s in it for months. Items went missing, when asked about them no one seemed to care. Once you run out of money and go on Medicaid they will kick you out as soon as you have to go .on Medicaid.

AWFUL!!!

This place was dirty. The staff was poorly trained and very disinterested in their patients. I honestly thought that I was going to die there! I couldn't wait to get out. They served junk food: no salads, no greens, only boiled/canned vegetables. My impression was that they were trying to spend as little as possible on the patients. I feel sorry for all of those that couldn't leave. There were 3 ladies that told me they begged for their children to take them out of this hole!

LESS THAN ZERO!

I am RN and had friend that was put in this facility. She there for less 2 weeks because there was such an outcry from her friends and family. The place was dirty. There were holes through the carpet right through to the subfloor. The fronts of kitchen drawers and cabinets were broken. There was no therapy dept., no activity dept. (the activity director came in to introduce herself and say that it was her last day and as far as she knew there was no replacement). The food was: pizza, hot dogs, spahetti-o type casserole, mac 'n cheese, basically garbage diet. The staff was insensitive and my impression they spent the bulk of their time trying to avoid the patients. The place deserves a MINUS -10! The only places that I've seen that are worse were in the southern part of the US.

not financial friendly

Our mom has been there for almost 2 years. When we first talked to them, we told them our mom's money will run out in almost 2 years. They told us that is not a problem they take in county aid residents. Well her money ran out and they told us they have no openings for county aid, they were at their limit and that we would have to pay the extra $1000.00 per month that the county doesn't pay. Needless to say we are moving her out. They got all her money and now she is no longer good enough for them. So beware, if you put your loved one there, get it in writing that they can stay after their money runs out. The care she received was very good, room needs updating, Activity Directors are great. If you loved one has dimentia, not a place I would choose.
