A Comfortable Place for our Father.
The staff at Ivy Park La Jolla seem to genuinely care about the residents in memory care. This, more than anything is of the utmost importance to us as no family lives in the area. We are truly depending on the staff to take care of my father. It has been a comfortable place for our Father.

A Good Fit for the Right People
There were a lot of aspects that were good for the family and our loved ones. It would be nice to be more clear on costs and the way they establish the fees for care. The location is convenient. This is a smaller community as well, and this was a nice feature. My loved ones didn't enjoy the food, as they found it to be boring, and it was hard to eat at times. There were three meals a day served to the residents.

We chose this facility because they let mom bring her cat, which was very important to her. The hands on staff were great. There was a big turnover in administrative positions while mom was there. That often left a void in communication and oversight between hands on staff and administration and folks like myself. I often felt I had to stay on top of issues, because they were not being addressed in a timely manner.

A concerned family member
The care in the mornings is good, but at night it's bad. It's been getting better now that we have a New Director, [name removed]. When they hire temps, it' bad. I don't think they have gone through a training period. I bought thicker Depends for my husband to wear at nighttime, but the temps don't know to use them so he ends up soiling himself. The regular staff are good, but the temps are not. The meals can vary - one night they were serving waffles with bacon, but I talked to someone about it and lately it's been good. There's always a vegetable and it's getting better. They have activities like volleyball, but they could have more. On the other hand, I also know that most people here have mental incapability so maybe they don't want to overstimulate them. I'm here all the time, everyday. I feed my husband his breakfast and lunch, then I come back and feed him his dinner. I took care of him for 10 years and it's a lot of work, so the value for the cost is good. For the room alone, the staff, the people, and the meals - I think the costs are okay. The most negative thing is - I don't think they should hire temps. When you hire a temp it's through an agency, you have to pay the agency a fee and then the agency pays the temp from that fee. So in that case, they should hire someone and keep them. I don't understand why they don't skip the agency and just hire directly. I've seen many temps come and they don't do anything. You will ask why they haven't changed that person, and they should say, "Oh that person didn't want it". Since [name removed] is here, the place has gotten really clean. The laundry room holds a big bin of soiled diapers and trash. It had a smell, but now its very clean and they even keep the door open. Since [name removed] has been here, there's been a lot of improvements.

Ok community, better than some
I was not happy with Sunrise of La Jolla. There were a lot of issues with payment, sometimes they charged double and made some mistakes and it would take a long time to get these payments fixed and remitted. Accounting would not answer my calls and when they did, they were rude. The care here was just ok, the staff was very gentle and loving, but it was nothing exceptional.

The facility is lovely and does not feel like a nursing home. It is clear that each individual, staff through residents, is treated with dignity and respect. The building is clean, inviting and I especially enjoyed [name removed]'s candor and ability to communicate clearly and openly.

An Amazing Difference
Sunrise of La Jolla is an amazing place. At the place we moved her from, almost every day she was left naked. When I asked to have someone dress her (I live in Tennessee, the facility is in California), they refused saying she wanted to be naked. She fell frequently. She missed meals and when they brought them to her room, the food was wrapped in cellophane. My mother has advanced dementia and isn't capable of deciding if she wants to wear clothes. The indignity was overwhelming. She is incapable of removing cellophane from food, so she went without and was losing weight. Several members of the staff repeatedly told me she was a mean spirited woman and they didn't want to take care of her. None of these conditions are present at Sunrise of La Jolla. The staff is kind and loving. They are well trained to understand dementia and its effects upon a person. Every person on staff repeatedly tells me mom is one of their favorite residents. She can no longer do anything for herself, yet every morning they awaken her and dress and groom her in lovely outfits. They hand feed her when necessary. They keep mom in community with the other residents and a caregiver is always in the room with the residents. She is happy. One day when she was able to speak, she told me she had never lived in such a nice place. I know those words were a gift from God to our family to let us know that we had made the right decision concerning her care. We are so thankful for Sunrise and every person who is employed there.

Beware! Bedsores! Do Not Let Your Loved One Live Here!
Beware! Bedsores and Ripoffs! This is a bad place. My mom moved there in July, walking with a walker and by the following March, she was completely immobile and had a BEDSORE! They had her on tons of dangerous meds, so that she was completely out of it mentally and could not hold even a simple conversation. Unacceptable for the most expensive assisted living in La Jolla!!! They do not keep the rooms clean. The staff is overworked and there are only 2 caregivers at night to take care of 2 floors of residents. The wait times - my mom would have to wait 30-50 minutes to get help for the restroom. On her very first night, they did not come for over 30 minutes after she pressed her call button (which constantly broke and had to be repaired and/or changed) - devasting for my mom, first time in a new place after 45 years in her old home - she had to call 9-1-1 because she was so scared. Later we found out, several residents call 9-1-1 or yell and yell at night because Sunrise is so understaffed and cannot take care of the residents in time. The administration lies and lies and plays dumb (or are super dumb?) - they just keep asking for more money every other month, even after they admit they are not doing their jobs! My mom was afraid of the administrators - they constantly lied and were rude to my mom and my family. At the beginning, they tell about all of the wonderful things they do - ALL LIES. They show you the bath with the music and candles but it is like pulling teeth to ever get one arranged!!! The only good thing about this place were the caregivers - they are dedicated and very caring - but they are so overworked and understaffed, they cannot possibly do their jobs adequately- unfair to them and to the residents. We moved my mom to a wonderful, new place - she is regaining her mobility, but may never walk again because of the damage Sunrise did. She is off all of the heavy meds and is happy conversing in all kinds of topics and has her complete memory back, thank God! Both her doctor and her P/T were shocked at what a different person she is now. Sunrise of La Jolla damaged my mom permanently and caused her and our family so much pain and distress and was completely unnecessary. We researched and thought we were making the best decision but made a terrible choice - since we left, we have met many people who had similar problems and issues with Sunrise. DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVED ONE IN THIS HORRIBLE PLACE!!!

Great team of caring professionals
My father spent the final three months of his life in the Sunrise La Jolla facility on their Memory care floor or "Reminisce Neighborhood" as they refer to it. It was a difficult decision for my mother to no longer have her husband at home but his level of needs had become too great for her to handle even with assistance from her children. Several of the family toured Sunrise La Jolla to see if it was worthy of having our Dad, who we all adored, live there. What we observed on our tour made the decision easy. We found the right place for Dad. We saw a dedicated team of care providers interacting with the residents and the residents seemingly very content, well cared for and safe. We continued to see this level of care on our regular visits to see my Dad, which were mostly unannounced. Sunrise encourages family and friends to visit anytime. We were always welcome. The level of care, respect and compassion provided by the staff to our Dad was extraordinary and we are very thankful to have found such a place.

Very Happy
We are very happy with the care dad is receiving at Sunrise at La Jolla. It is a clean and well-kept community. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The director is very friendly and welcoming and always says hi to us when we come to visit. The staff is also very friendly and attentive to my dad's care needs. They have an open door policy and they are easy to communicate with any questions or concerns we have. The food here is definitely a 5-star rating, it is really good. They offer a ton of activities that the staff members encourage the residents to participate in. Outside there are several patios for him to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. I would definitely recommend this community to others.

A nice tour
This is a nice and clean community for families looking for assisted living assistance. My mom was not needing this type of care. The staff were nice and friendly and answered our questions. We were offered a snack, but did decline. They offered activities that seems to appear as exercises . I think that they could offer a different variety of activities for those who would want to participate. We were very happy with the clealiness. I would recommend families to see if this is what they are looking for.
